$25M Gift Creates Applied Economics School at Cornell

From the Cornell Chronicle, June 8, 2010: "One of Cornell's gems just became a little more visible. Cornell President David Skorton June 8 announced that $25 million from the family of John Dyson '65 will establish a new school -- the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management -- in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). The school is named for Dyson's father to recognize his contributions to American business. The event took place in Mann Library on the Ithaca campus.

Washington University Receives $60 Million Gift

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, May 21, 2010: "Washington University will announce today a $60 million gift at a time when charitable giving to schools nationwide has fallen dramatically. The donation is being made by John F. McDonnell and the JSM Charitable Trust, with the bulk of the money — $48 million — having no particular strings attached.

Paul Terasaki donates $50 million to UCLA's Life Sciences

UCLA Press Release, May 13, 2010: "Paul Ichiro Terasaki, who as a teenager and young adult worked as a busboy, gardener and handyman and who spent three years interned with his family in a Japanese American relocation camp during World War II, has given $50 million to the Division of Life Sciences in the UCLA College of Letters and Science." Fordham Law Receives $6.5 Million in Gifts

From Philanthropy News Digest, May 11, 2010: "Fordham University School of Law has announced gifts totaling $6.5 million from alumni Paul R. Brenner and Paul P. Tanico. Gift Shows China Philanthropy Has Reached the Big Leagues

From the Wall Street Journal, May 4, 2010: "Philanthropy in mainland China has been on a tear, rising in line with the country's overall wealth, and the net worth of its richest individuals. According to Hurun, the top 50 most generous people in China donated 8.21 billion yuan ($1.2 billion) in 2009, more than double the 3.89 billion yuan the top 50 donated in 2008." Passing the Funding Test; Despite the recession, schools bring in record contributions

From Crain's New York Business, April 25, 2010: "In 2009, a year in which university endowments lost nearly one quarter of their value and college fundraising posted its steepest drop on record, Fordham Law School had its best year ever. The school raked in $17.5 million in donor gifts and came within reach of its $100 million campaign goal. 'Our fundraising has increased 500% over the past five years,' says William Treanor, dean of Fordham Law." Read more
